The band earned a unanimous 1st division rating from all 3 judges on Saturday, Oct. 17, at UIL Regional Marching Contest in Hondo.  One judge commented, “This music is hard sitting down and you are doing it well AND marching.” Because of their fine showing, they will advance to the area contest this Saturday, Oct. 24, at East Central in San Antonio.  They are in for a very early wake up since they march at 10:45 AM as of right now for the prelim competition.  Should they earn a spot in the finals, the band will need to march again sometime between 7:30 and 10:00 PM.  We hope you will be there to cheer us on.  There will be somewhere in the area of 20 bands at area and only the top 3 or 4 (depending on the final number that make area) will advance to state!  In class AA, the other bands advancing from our region to area are Cotulla and Jourdanton.  Our former competitors Nueces Canyon and Charlotte advanced from class A.

Harper Elementary School

Harper Elementary is among six Texas schools eligible to be considered for nomination for the 2009 Title I, Part A National Distinguished School Recognition Program.  The purpose of this program is to identify schools that are demonstrating success in ensuring that all students, including all demographic groups of students, make significant progress toward learning.

The Texas Commissioner of Education has the opportunity to nominate two schools to receive this award from the National Association of State Title I Directors.  The winners will be honored at the Nation Title I Conference in Washington DC, on Jan. 21, 2010, and will be featured in a publication that describes all of the National Title I Award winners.

Harper has met the stringent criteria for identifying these schools and will be involved in further evaluation this fall including visits from a peer review team which includes volunteers from the Regional Education Service Centers, the Texas Comprehensive Center, and educators from school districts in Texas.  This team will examine the overall academic program at the school and will interview teachers, administrators, support staff, and parents to determine the extent to which our school provides opportunities for all children to achieve the state's academic standards.

Congratulations to our Elementary School on achieving the distinction of being one of six outstanding Texas public schools eligible for consideration of this award.

Congratulations!   HARPER ELEMENTARY has made the TBEC Honor Roll for 2009.  Of the more than 8,000 Texas public schools less than 4% will be so honored.  The TBEC Honor Roll is the most prestigious award for sustained, academic excellence in Texas.  It recognizes schools that have demonstrated three years of consistent, high performance in all subjects compared to other schools serving similar student populations. TBEC Honor Roll schools have the highest percentage of students performing at the state’s most rigorous standard-commended- in every subject. Harper has truly earned a place on the Honor Roll through hard work and student achievement over an extended period of time.
