The Harper High School Mighty Longhorn Band flexed its muscles in the old-fashioned Harper way at Monday night’s UIL State Marching Contest Finals before returning to Harper at 1:15 Tuesday morning.  Coming out of the preliminary round in 7th place, I met with the band about their trying to play too loudly.  Our discussion focused on our being the band that we were; not the other bands in the competition.  During the 42 minute warm up period, the band was asked to do things that they had never done before and do them on the field with the state championship on the line in front of a large crowd.  Those people in attendance were absolutely amazed at the performance and the improvement from prelims to finals.

1st place Gold Medals went to the Forsan Buffalo Band (placing 1st on 4 of 5 judge’s sheets) and 2nd place Silver Medals went to the 6 year defending state champion band from Sundown.  Your Harper Longhorn Band was awarded the 3rd Place Bronze Medals (finishing 1st on 1 of 5 judge’s sheets).  During the competition, comments were received such as “You have the best feet of any band I have seen today!”; “Your marching fundamentals are as clean as 5A bands…Thanks for your attention to detail!”  and “Super Job!”

The Harper Band has a strong reputation as one of the finest bands around the state, no matter the classification. This year marked the 9th trip to the state marching contest in 10 cycles.  The band has finished in 3rd place on 4 different occasions.  In its last 3 trips, the band has improved greatly on each trip; starting at 14th place in 2003; 6th place in 2005; and 3rd place in 2007.

As you see the band students today congratulate them not only on their fine showing but more importantly congratulate them on their diligence in going around obstacles that would have derailed others.

The members of the Mighty Longhorn Band finished in 1st place at Saturday’s South Texas Area Marching Contest.  Because of their fine showing, the Harper Band is one of 16 Class A bands that will appear at the Alamodome on MONDAY, November 5th, for the state marching contest preliminaries.  Finals will be held MONDAY NIGHT with the performances of the top 7 from prelims.

The official schedule for next Monday can be viewed below.  The band will do a sneak peak performance for you to meet and well-wish the band members on Sunday afternoon at 3:00.  There will be a send off for the band at 7:00 Monday morning.

October 13 the Harper Band earned superior 1st division ratings from ALL of the judges at the Blinn Marching Festival.

On Saturday, the band competed in the Hill Country Marching Festival in Fredericksburg.  Again, this year the band chose to compete in Class AA for this event.  Please congratulate your band students as you see them on Tuesday (or if you see them on Monday since they will be around for afternoon rehearsal) for the great job that they did.  Below is a list of their accomplishments from Saturday.  Each year, this contest is a giant push for the band since the band has always won the Outstanding Band in their class each year.  I think that these awards show not only what they did on Saturday, but the intense work they have put forth since they started band with their trip to band camp.  As you probably already know this is a state advancing year and it seems they are VERY focused right now on the job ahead in moving up from their 6th place finish 2 years ago.

This week the band will travel to Brenham to participate in the Blinn Marching Festival.  We will be leaving at 5:00 AM on Saturday morning.  The band takes the field at 1:30 PM.  This week we will compete in Class A.  Other bands in the contest will be Iola, Shiner, and Flatonia; all were Texas State Marching Contest participants in 2005!  It should be a great contest.  Scary thing is that one of the 4 who ALL have great traditions is going home out of the awarded top 3.  This is probably going to be the toughest non-state marching contest in the state this year in any classification.  I know it’s a long ride but it may be your big chance to see some really awesome shows.

Thank you for all you do to help us help our kids be as successful as they are!

Upcoming Schedule:

This week the band will travel to Brenham to participate in the Blinn Marching Festival.  The band takes the field at 1:30 PM.  Next week the band will travel to Hondo for UIL Regional Marching Contest.  Harper will begin the contest as the 1:00 PM entry.  Other bands (in order of performance) include:  Charlotte, Brackett, Nueces Canyon, D’Hanis, and Medina.  The 3 top bands chosen by the judges or all that earn 1st division ratings will advance to the UIL Area Marching Contest at East Central High School on October 27th to compete against class A bands from all over South Texas.  The top 3 bands at area will advance to the Texas State Marching Contest in the Alamodome on November 5th. Prelims are early in the morning featuring the best 15 Class A bands in the state (5 areas represented by 3 bands).  Finals are that evening featuring the top 7 bands from prelims.

Our kids get REALLY excited when we take the field and all that green section comes to its feet, cheering us on and making lots of noise.  We hope you can attend at least one of these contests and join in on the fun.

Once again Harper Elementary students brought home the First place trophy at the Elementary UIL contest.  Harper Elementary has won the UIL contest for the last five years.  Our students work hard and strive to do their best, and the students expect to win the contest every year.  We also have great teachers, parents and grandparents here at Harper that help the students get ready for the contests.  Shannon  Kramer, one of our First grade teachers at Harper, also serves as the UIL Coordinator and does a fantastic job!
